Q/A

FOCUS TOPIC: DO YOU BELIEVE MEN ARE FROM MARS AND WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS?

1) What hormones do you think are elevated when married couples are engaged in an argument or a conflict?

A. ACTH
B. Adrenaline
C. Calcitonin
D. A and B
E. All of the above

2) True or False.

Couples who are happily married show a greater proliferation of white blood cells (the immune systems major defense weapons) when exposed to foreign invaders than unhappily married couples.

3) What do you think is the determining factor in a relationship where husbands and wives feel satisfied with romance and passion?

ANSWER:
Focused Topic: Men from Mars - Women from Venus?

1) Answer: D (Both Hormones Adrenaline & ACTH)

The significant physiological response in couples while arguing was studied by a major landmark study from psychologist Janice Kiecolt-Glaser and her husband Ron Glaser at The Ohio State University measuring levels of stress-related hormone, adrenaline that showed in comparison to healthy couples that couples who were unhappy secreted 34% higher levels of adrenaline while arguing and hormone ACTH was also found to be twice as high in unhappy couples compared to happy couples.
This effect of elevated stress hormones is also extended to our environment. Another study of preschoolers compared children being raised in an environment of marital hostility to healthy parents. The results showed that children surrounded by violence had chronically elevated levels of stress hormones as well compared with other children. This consequence continued in their later years of life suffering from depression, behavioral problems, aggression, rejection from peers, and academic failure.

2) Answer: True

This was confirmed in another study that tested the immune-system assessment of couples who were followed up with blood samples. Happily married couples showed a greater proliferation of White Blood Cells to foreign invaders than did the other subjects. In addition, subjects who were more satisfied in their relationship had more effective Natural Killer Cells than did others; hence proving the positive immunological consequences to healthy marriages.

3) Answer: Quality of Friendship

Another study confirmed that the most essential factor that BOTH men and women feel satisfied with, (for romance, passion, and sex) in their relationship, by 70% (equally), is from the quality of couple’s friendship. This proved that gender differences may have contributed to the problems but they do not cause them.

b. From Fitness Buffs to Relationship Buffs- after analyzing the data from these physiological and immunological healthy outcomes of relationships, it is recommended that spending 10% of weekly workout time (or 20 minutes a day) focusing on relationship issues instead of getting physically fit will result in THREE TIMES the health benefits derived from exercise class or even the treadmill!!!
